Profile
Artek is an alias used by a threat actor that has been publicly linked to the hacktivist collectives Anonymous Italia and AntiSec-Italia. Beyond the alias, little independent information about Artek's origins or structure is available in open sources. The actor is not described as a formal organization but rather as a label attached to certain operations carried out by those groups. References to Artek appear primarily in connection with a series of 2016 attacks against Italian healthcare institutions.
The targeting observed in those operations focused exclusively on healthcare providers located in Italy. The sector affected included hospitals, clinics, and university medical centers. The stated strategic objective was to protest national ADHD treatment policies that prioritize medication over alternative therapies. This motivation placed the activity within the hacktivist realm, aiming for disruption and public exposure rather than financial gain or espionage.
The tactics noted in the public reports involved defacing the public-facing websites of the victim organizations. Attackers also leaked internal communications, employee CVs, patient application scans, and inventory documents. The leaked material amounted to roughly 2.5 gigabytes and was characterized by analysts as an opportunistic data dump. No specific malware families, exploit kits, or custom tooling were mentioned in the descriptions of these incidents.
Attribution to Artek is therefore derived from the claimed involvement of Anonymous Italia and AntiSec-Italia in the #OpSafePharma campaign. The campaign itself is identified as a hacktivist effort opposing the Italian approach to ADHD medication. The two reported breaches on 21 August 2016 hit four Italian healthcare organizations, including the Azienda Ospedaliera Santa Maria clinic and the University of Naples Federico II clinic, among others. These incidents represent the primary publicly known activity associated with the Artek alias at this time.
