Flash Gordon is an alias used by athreat actor known to operate from the United States of America. The actor became known to the public through a data leak incident that occurred on 2016‑05‑02. In that incident, a third‑party vendor’s server hosting student and staff records was configured without authentication requirements, allowing anyone with a web browser to view the contents. The openly accessible repository held plaintext files containing personal information for roughly 368,000 current and former students enrolled with Florida Virtual School. The same exposure also included records for more than 4,000 teachers, administrators, and support staff employed by Leon County Schools. Among the disclosed data were Social Security numbers, home addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, academic transcripts, immunization histories, disciplinary actions, and details about parents or guardians.

The vulnerability was first spotted by an independent security researcher who downloaded a sample of the files and notified the affected school districts. Later, a user on a public forum re‑uploaded portions of the dataset and posted a link that drew the attention of law‑enforcement officials, directly contradicting the vendor’s subsequent statement that the leak resulted from an external hacking event. Investigators found no evidence of malware, exploit kits, or credential‑theft tools being used in the incident. Despite having made extracts of the data publicly available, the individual or group behind the alias offered to help the vendor and the school districts remediate the exposure and improve server hardening. No additional malware families, custom scripts, or specific intrusion techniques have been publicly associated with Flash Gordon in any other disclosed incident. As a result, the 2016‑05‑02 education‑sector data leak constitutes the only publicly documented operation linked to the threat actor known as Flash Gordon.
