Cyber Incident Victim: Valdosta State University

Date:

Dec 2024

Location:

United States of America

Summary

A cyberattack at Valdosta State University caused a complete shutdown of its network, systems, and internet access, disrupting in-person classes and computer labs due to unavailable classroom technology. While online classes continued unaffected, the incident forced IT and cybersecurity teams to collaborate with external experts to secure data and methodically restore operations by scanning all systems for vulnerabilities. The university has not provided a timeline for full network restoration, leaving students and faculty to adapt to limited technological resources during recovery efforts.

Description

On December 28, 2024, Valdosta State University’s Cybersecurity Team detected an alert that triggered an immediate and comprehensive shutdown of all university networks, systems, and internet connectivity. This action affected servers, workstations, and every network connection across campus to contain the cyberattack and prevent further damage. The university’s IT and cybersecurity teams collaborated with external experts to secure data and initiate recovery efforts, though no definitive timeline for full restoration was established. The shutdown disrupted all campus technology infrastructure, forcing students and staff to adapt to manual processes for academic and administrative functions. Online classes continued without interruption, but in-person instruction faced significant challenges due to the loss of classroom technology, including presentation tools and lab equipment. Faculty reported difficulties accessing teaching materials and communication platforms typically hosted on university systems.

The prolonged outage impacted student operations, particularly for seniors reliant on digital systems like MyVSU for coursework and graduation requirements. Jasmine Hightower, a student, described the situation as inconvenient, emphasizing the disruption to routine academic workflows. Cybersecurity expert Dean Gunsolas characterized the shutdown as a necessary containment measure, comparing the recovery process to a "health check" requiring meticulous scanning of all systems to eliminate vulnerabilities. He noted that infrastructure weaknesses, such as inadequate security protocols, often enable such attacks. University officials maintained a cautious approach to reactivation, prioritizing system integrity over speed. As of January 13, 2025, VSU’s network remained partially offline, with no public update on when full functionality would resume.
