Description
On June 1, 2025, a press release from the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern government reported an attempted hacker attack on the service smartphones used by the Landespolizei Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The attack was directed at the server that interconnects these police service smartphones. According to the release, the perpetrators sought to compromise the devices through this central server. The incident was identified as a hacker‑attempt rather than a successful breach.

As a result of the ongoing investigations, the mPol (mobile police) smartphones could not be used to their full extent by officers on patrol for several days. Normally, these devices enable online queries for vehicle registration data, verification of identification documents, and further research while officers are on foot or in patrol vehicles. Because the smartphones were limited, officers had to revert to the pre‑mPol procedure of transmitting license‑plate numbers via radio to the police station, where station computers retrieved the requested information and sent it back by radio. The smartphones remained functional for voice calls during the restriction.
Investigative and analytical work was carried out on the computer servers that manage and protect the police service smartphones from hacker attempts. The state commissioner for data protection and freedom of information in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was notified of the incident, and a formal investigation procedure was initiated. The release did not specify any further details about the attackers or the outcome of the analysis.
