Description
On or around January 18, 2016, Azerbaijani hacker group Anti-Armenia Team executed a coordinated cyber attack targeting Armenian diplomatic and international mission websites across 40 countries. The operation compromised the official websites of Armenia's Permanent Mission to NATO, Permanent Mission to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and Permanent Mission to the United Nations. Attackers replaced legitimate website content with defacement pages displaying military propaganda, including video messages showcasing Azerbaijan's military capabilities and a prominent image of Azerbaijan's Prime Minister addressing the nation. The defacements occurred three days before public reporting on January 24, with Zone-H mirror records providing technical confirmation of the compromises. This attack represented an escalation in the ongoing cyber conflict between Azerbaijani and Armenian hacking groups, following prior operations by Armenian group Monte Melkonian Cyber Army (MMCA) against Azerbaijani government systems.

The attackers framed their actions as retaliation for MMCA's December 2015 breach of Azerbaijan Ministry servers and previous cyber operations dating back to July 2014, when Anti-Armenia Team had allegedly compromised the Armenian presidential website. In communications with media, the hackers emphasized Armenia's perceived inability to counter their technical capabilities, claiming their operations created "problems on the national level" for Armenia. The incident occurred against the backdrop of unresolved military tensions between the nations stemming from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, with no formal diplomatic relations established between Azerbaijan and Armenia. While full technical details of the attack vector remain undisclosed, the widespread geographic scope affecting 40 countries' embassy websites demonstrated significant coordination. The defacements caused temporary disruption to official communications channels and served as a public demonstration of cyber capabilities amid ongoing geopolitical hostilities.
