Description
Bad Tölz had established a notable presence on Instagram, sharing images that attracted attention from users across the platform. A few years earlier, the travel portal Travelcircus published a statistic that ranked Bad Tölz among the top German small towns whose photos were frequently shared on Instagram. This ranking highlighted the city’s success in using the platform for self‑promotion and tourism outreach. At the beginning of the current year, unknown actors gained unauthorized access to the official Instagram account operated by the city’s Tourist‑Info office. The hijacking gave the attackers full control over the account’s content, followers, and settings.

Upon discovering the breach, the city administration immediately suspended the compromised Instagram channel in an attempt to stop further misuse. Despite efforts to recover the account, the suspension proved irreversible; the platform would not allow the original channel to be reinstated. Consequently, the city was left with no alternative but to abandon the hijacked account entirely. To maintain its Instagram presence, Bad Tölz had to create a brand‑new account from scratch, starting with zero followers and no prior content. This forced restart erased the accumulated reach and engagement that had been built over previous years. The incident thus required the city to rebuild its social‑media strategy and audience base anew. The need to begin again at zero underscores the lasting impact of the hack on Bad Tölz’s digital outreach.
