Description

On Friday morning January 16 2026, users of the social media platform X began reporting access problems. By 10:52 a.m. Eastern Time, Downdetector recorded approximately 200,000 issue reports from users. The most common error message displayed was “Something went wrong. Try reloading.” Attempting to reload the page resulted in an unresolved spinning circle. Downdetector categorized the reports, with 56 percent related to the X mobile application, 33 percent to the website, and 10 percent to server connection issues. The outage affected users attempting to log in, view timelines, and send messages across the platform.

This was not the first time X experienced a widespread disruption; a similar outage occurred in November 2025. During the November incident users saw error messages such as “Internal server error / Error code 500” and prompts to “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed.” In March 2025 the platform suffered multiple brief outages that together lasted about forty‑five minutes. Downdetector recorded roughly twenty‑one thousand reports from users in the United States and ten thousand eight hundred from the United Kingdom during those March 2025 events. An earlier outage took place in August 2024, though the article does not detail its specific symptoms. Prior to that, in July 2023, key features of X were impaired, affecting functionality for a subset of users. Additionally, in March 2024 the live audio event known as Twitter Spaces, used by Ron DeSantis for his presidential announcement, crashed during the broadcast.
