Description

On or shortly before December 1, 2022, Appylio UG, a Germany-wide provider of digital city voucher platforms, suffered a cyberattack targeting its server infrastructure. The company notified Wesel-Marketing—the municipal marketing organization for the city of Wesel—shortly before Christmas 2022 about the incident. The attack disrupted access to Wesel's Stadtgutschein (city voucher) portal, preventing residents from purchasing or redeeming local vouchers. Appylio initially assured Wesel-Marketing that system functionality would be restored by January 9, 2023. The outage immediately impacted Wesel's local economy, as the platform served as a key tool for supporting regional businesses through voucher-based transactions.

Technical repairs took longer than initially projected due to the attack's complexity, forcing Appylio to extend the recovery timeline indefinitely. The company’s programmers worked intensively to resolve the issues but faced unforeseen technical challenges. While Appylio confirmed customer data remained uncompromised, the attack caused cascading disruptions, affecting voucher platforms for multiple German cities and municipalities beyond Wesel. Wesel-Marketing publicly communicated the ongoing outage and repair delays to residents, emphasizing the unresolved technical limitations. The prolonged unavailability of the platform underscored the incident's operational severity and its broader implications for municipal services relying on Appylio’s infrastructure.
