Description

In early September 2016, Vienna International Airport experienced a cyberattack claimed by the Turkish hacker group "Aslan Neferler Tim" (Lion Soldiers Team). The group publicly asserted responsibility through a social media post, framing the attack as retaliation against airport authorities for denying emergency visas to a group of Turkish nationals stranded due to a grounded flight. According to the hackers’ statement, the travelers were refused permission to leave the airport transit area and secure hotel accommodations overnight despite their flight’s technical issues. The group characterized this decision as an act of "racism" and stated their actions were a defense against perceived attacks on "Islam and the (Turkish) nation." Austrian authorities confirmed the cyber intrusion attempt occurred the previous week but assessed it as unsuccessful. The incident coincided with heightened diplomatic tensions between Austria and Turkey, as Austria had publicly advocated for the European Union to suspend Turkey’s membership negotiations.

Austrian federal police launched an investigation into the attack on September 7, 2016, focusing on verifying the authenticity of the hacking group’s claim. Law enforcement officials declined to disclose technical details about the attack vector, targeted systems, or potential data compromise, citing the ongoing nature of the probe. The hackers’ public justification linked the incident directly to the visa denial episode and broader geopolitical friction over Turkey’s EU accession prospects. No operational disruptions or service impacts at the airport were reported, consistent with authorities’ assessment of the attack’s failure. The investigation remained active as of the initial police statement, with no subsequent public updates regarding attribution confirmation or forensic findings.
