May 2016

Location:

United States of America

Summary

A hacker using the alias Guccifer 2.0 leaked internal documents stolen from the Democratic National Committee, including donor lists focused on convicted individuals Norman Hsu and Paul J. Magliocchetti, opposition research on political figures such as Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, and Glenn Beck, and archived social media content. Description

On July 14, 2016, a hacker using the alias Guccifer 2.0 released a new batch of documents allegedly stolen from the Democratic National Committee’s computer networks. The leak included opposition research files, internal memos, and donor lists containing approximately 1,500 Democratic Party contributors. Among the released materials were documents focusing on convicted donors Norman Hsu and Paul J. Magliocchetti. Hsu, a former Democratic donor, had been convicted in 2009 for operating a Ponzi scheme and committing mail and wire fraud, while Magliocchetti pleaded guilty in 2010 to illegal campaign contribution activities. The leak exposed donation records linked to both individuals. Additionally, opposition research files targeting Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor, were published, including archived controversial statements she made during press interviews and a downloaded copy of her 2011 Twitter account. Another document titled 'Right-wing Loaded Language' compiled talking points from conservative figures such as Newt Gingrich, Glenn Beck, and Ann Coulter.

Guccifer 2.0 claimed responsibility for the breach and stated the documents were selected by browsing folders within the DNC’s network for materials "of any use," promising further releases. The Democratic National Committee did not confirm the authenticity of the leaked files at the time of the report. Cybersecurity firms investigating the intrusion attributed it to Russian state-sponsored actors, though Guccifer 2.0 denied any affiliation with Russia, and Kremlin officials rejected the allegations. The incident marked an escalation in the theft and public dissemination of sensitive political data, exposing internal opposition research strategies and donor information while raising concerns about foreign interference in U.S. electoral processes.
