Description

Incident Description:
Mumsnet, a popular UK based parenting website and forum, suffered a security breach on 11th April 2014 due to the Heartbleed vulnerability. The attackers were able to exfiltrate sensitive data from Mumsnet's application server without being detected for two years.

The attack was discovered when an administrator noticed unusual traffic patterns coming from the server and launched an investigation. It was found that the attackers had exploited the Heartbleed vulnerability, which allowed them to access private information such as passwords, usernames, and other sensitive data belonging to Mumsnet users.

Mumsnet took immediate action by shutting down their application server and taking it offline for maintenance while they worked on patching the vulnerability. They also advised all users to change their passwords and provided instructions on how to do so securely.

The incident highlighted the importance of keeping software up-to-date with security patches, as well as the need for regular security audits and monitoring to detect potential threats before they become major incidents. Mumsnet's quick response in addressing the issue helped minimize the impact on their users and prevent any further data breaches from occurring.
