Description

On January 21, 2014, Azerbaijani hackers operating under the name "Anti-Armenia Team" executed a coordinated cyberattack against 64 Armenian websites, including Artsakh State University’s online presence. The attackers compromised government ministries, municipal districts, educational institutions, and cultural organizations, prominently defacing each site with an anti-Armenian video message and a dedicated hacktivist landing page. High-profile targets included Armenia’s Ministry of Education, police departments, the Football Federation of Armenia, and the "Youth For Achievements" Educational NGO. This incident marked a continuation of the group’s activities, which previously included breaching Armenia’s National Security Service servers in 2013 to leak classified documents and defacing other government portals in August 2013. The attackers publicly claimed responsibility by directly contacting media outlets, though they provided no evidence of data exfiltration or unauthorized access beyond the defacements.

Cyber Incident Image

The attack occurred against the backdrop of the protracted Nagorno-Karabakh territorial dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan, a context explicitly referenced in the hackers’ messaging. By January 23, 2014, all affected websites, including Artsakh State University’s, had been fully restored to operational status with no visible remnants of the compromise. Technical details regarding intrusion vectors, duration of downtime, or internal detection mechanisms were not disclosed in public reporting. The incident underscored the persistent targeting of Armenian digital infrastructure by Azerbaijani threat actors, aligning with historical patterns of geopolitical cyber activity between the two nations. No disruptions to university operations or corroborated theft of sensitive data were reported following the restoration of services.
