Description

The Town of Huntsville, Ontario, experienced a cybersecurity incident discovered over the weekend of March 9-10, 2024. Upon identifying the incident, municipal staff activated their incident response protocols, taking immediate steps to isolate impacted systems and take additional systems offline as a precautionary measure to prevent further unauthorized activity. The municipality engaged a team of cybersecurity specialists to investigate the cause and extent of the incident, with the investigation remaining ongoing as of March 11. Initial assessments indicated no evidence of compromised sensitive data, including personal information, though officials noted they would take appropriate steps if such compromise was discovered through continued forensic analysis.

The incident caused significant operational disruptions across municipal services. Town Hall remained closed to the public on both Monday, March 11 and Tuesday, March 12, 2024, while the Huntsville Public Library closed on March 11 before reopening on March 12. Precautionary system isolation measures disrupted online services and rendered some municipal and Council email accounts inaccessible. Customer service operations shifted to telephone support via 705-789-1751. The municipality cancelled multiple public meetings, including the March 13 Regular Planning Committee Meeting, March 13 Special Council Meeting, and March 12 Library Board Meeting, with the latter rescheduled for March 26. March break programming continued unaffected at the Canada Summit Centre and Algonquin Theatre day camp facilities. Town officials committed to maintaining transparency through regular updates via municipal newsfeeds and social media channels while requesting community patience during the investigation. No restoration timelines for full system functionality were provided in the initial updates.
