On January 31, 2023, Emerald Expositions was affected by a mass ransomware attack that exploited a vulnerability in Fortra's GoAnywhere secure file transfer tool. The attack was attributed to the Russia‑linked Clop ransomware gang, which claimed to have compromised approximately 130 organizations. Clop threatened to publish stolen data on its dark web leak site unless victims paid a ransom. While some victims, such as Community Health Systems, confirmed the theft of large volumes of sensitive data, Emerald Expositions characterized any potential impact as limited to non‑sensitive test information. The company stated that it did not experience actual data exfiltration during the incident. Fortra’s delayed disclosure of the vulnerability and the postponement of a patch allowed the exploit to be used widely before defenses could be updated. Throughout the investigation, Emerald Expositions remained non‑committal about detailed breach specifics, consistent with the cautious approach taken by several other affected organizations.
