In August 2020, a misconfigured email distribution list created during a routine security update resulted in unsolicited messages containing explicit and disturbing content being sent to ACT public school students. A student inadvertently triggered the initial spread by emailing all Year 8 peers, after which other users exploited the list to share inappropriate material across multiple year groups. The dissemination disrupted normal educational activities, prompting the temporary suspension of Google Classroom and email services within the Directorate’s digital environment. Access to these platforms was restored in phases after the issue was contained and the distribution list was corrected. Federal authorities monitored the incident due to the nature of the content, although no formal investigation was opened. The episode underscored the importance of robust internal communication controls and led to a review of email list management procedures within the organisation. Following the incident, the Directorate increased its focus on cybersecurity awareness training for staff and students. It also implemented additional validation steps for creating and modifying distribution lists to prevent similar occurrences.
