Profile
The Canton of Vaud, also referred to by its capital Lausanne, is a public administration that exercises governmental authority over the western Swiss region of Vaud. It enacts and enforces cantonal legislation, manages public education systems from primary schools to vocational training and the University of Lausanne, and oversees public health services including hospitals and preventive care programmes. The canton is responsible for territorial planning, infrastructure maintenance such as roads and public transport, and the provision of social welfare benefits to residents. It also operates police and justice services, ensuring public safety and judicial proceedings within its jurisdiction. In addition to these core functions, the canton supports cultural initiatives, environmental protection, and economic development through subsidies and partnerships with local businesses.
With a population of approximately 820,000 inhabitants and an area of about 3,212 square kilometres, the Canton of Vaud ranks as the third most populous canton in Switzerland. Its economy is diversified, featuring strong sectors in biotechnology, finance, tourism, and international organisations, many of which are headquartered in Lausanne and the surrounding Lake Geneva area. The canton’s governmental structure comprises a seven‑member State Council that exercises executive authority and a 150‑seat Grand Council that serves as the legislative body, both elected by popular vote. As a member state of the Swiss Confederation, the canton retains sovereignty over its internal affairs while participating in federal decision‑making processes. Its official language is French, reflecting the linguistic character of the region, and it maintains diplomatic and cooperative relations with neighbouring cantons and international entities based within its territory.
