WTVG, also known as 13abc, is a television station based in the United States that provides broadcast television services. In November 2019 the station experienced a computer virus infection that originated from a downloaded video file and spread to its editing system. The malware disrupted video playback, eventually causing a complete failure after a restart attempt, which impaired the station's ability to broadcast news and sports programming. As a result, the station aired shortened newscasts, substituted syndicated content, and relied on live footage and graphics to maintain limited service. The virus affected 45 laptops, each requiring approximately an hour of decontamination by internal and corporate IT teams. Meteorological systems remained unaffected because they are isolated on a separate network. Investigators determined the incident was a random occurrence rather than a targeted attack, and staff adapted their workflows to continue broadcasting during the remediation process.
