Profile
The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina, also known as Centralna Banka Bosne i Hercegovine or Centralna banka BiH, is headquartered in Bosnia and Herzegovina and functions as the nation's central bank. Its core mandate encompasses the stewardship of the country's monetary policy, the issuance of currency, and the oversight of financial stability within the national banking sector. The institution operates as the primary monetary authority for the state, serving the entire domestic economy and representing the country in international financial forums. Its role is fundamental to the economic governance of Bosnia and Herzegovina, positioning it at the center of the national financial system.
On May 6, 2016, the bank was the subject of a significant cybersecurity incident when its online services were disrupted by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. This event was part of a coordinated campaign named Op Icarus, executed by the hacktivist groups Anonymous and Ghost Squad. The operation targeted multiple international financial institutions simultaneously as a protest against perceived financial corruption, a motive explicitly linked by the attackers to the Panama Papers leaks. The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina's temporary service interruption placed it among a select group of global central banks targeted in that wave of ideologically driven cyberattacks. The attackers had publicly threatened over 160 banking entities worldwide, framing the action as a stand against systemic financial misconduct. Although the disruption was brief and services were restored promptly, the incident underscored the bank's exposure to transnational hacktivist threats. It highlighted how even core national financial infrastructure could be drawn into global protest movements leveraging cyber capabilities. The attack remains a documented event in the institution's recent operational history, illustrating a specific vulnerability to large-scale denial-of-service campaigns.
