The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) is a political organisation that seeks to represent citizens in the democratic process of Austria by developing policy platforms, nominating candidates for elections, and governing at federal, state, and municipal levels when entrusted with parliamentary mandates. The ÖVP is characterised as a centre‑right, Christian democratic party that places emphasis on social market economics, strong ties to the Catholic social teaching tradition, and a pro‑European stance within the Austrian political landscape. It is a member of the European People's Party, the largest transnational political party family, which provides it with a network of like‑minded parties across the continent and influences its policy positions on European Union matters. Structurally, the party is a voluntary association of members and is not owned by any parent corporation or subsidiary entity; its governance rests with elected party bodies such as the federal party congress, the executive board, and regional party organisations. In September 2024, the ÖVP experienced a distributed denial‑of‑service attack that temporarily disrupted the accessibility of its federal website and the Tiroler regional site, although the party reported that its defences prevented any data loss and services were restored after urgent IT work. The incident highlighted the party’s reliance on digital infrastructure for communication and mobilisation, and it coincided with similar disruptions affecting other Austrian political parties during the same period.
