Profile

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functions as a national political organisation that seeks to gain electoral mandate, formulate public policy and govern at both the central and state levels in India. Its core activities include contesting elections, developing legislative agendas, mobilising a cadre of volunteers for grassroots outreach and communicating its political platform through rallies, media and digital channels. The party also engages in policy research and formulation, aiming to translate its ideological stance into concrete programmes on issues such as economic reform, national security and social welfare. In addition to traditional campaigning, the BJP has invested in digital outreach, using social media platforms and its official websites to disseminate information and interact with supporters.

Headquartered in New Delhi, the BJP operates across the length and breadth of India, maintaining a presence in virtually every state and union territory through a network of district, block and booth-level committees. It currently leads the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition that holds power at the federal government, and it has formed or participated in governments in numerous states over the past decades. The party’s organisational structure is characterised by a strong cadre base that draws on voluntary workers who undertake activities ranging from voter registration drives to local development projects. This extensive grassroots network enables the BJP to sustain electoral competitiveness and to implement its policy agenda at the municipal and panchayat levels.

Ideologically, the BJP identifies with a vision of cultural nationalism often described as Hindutva, and it maintains organisational links to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which influences its cadre training and ideological framing. The party distinguishes itself through a disciplined, hierarchical organisational model that emphasises loyalty, regular shakha (branch) meetings and a clear chain of command from national office to local units. Its notable competency in modern campaigning was evident in the extensive use of data analytics and social media during recent election cycles, although this digital footprint has also exposed it to cyber incidents, such as the defacement of its official website in March 2019 and earlier attacks on state‑level sites in 2014. Structurally, the BJP is a standalone political entity without a parent corporation or subsidiary holdings; it is funded primarily through contributions from supporters, membership fees and donations disclosed under electoral finance regulations.
