Profile

Hokkaido University, also known as Hokudai, is a national university located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. It provides undergraduate, graduate, and professional education across a broad range of disciplines including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, agriculture, and medicine. The university carries out fundamental and applied research, often in collaboration with domestic and international institutions, industry partners, and government agencies. Its academic activities are supported by a network of faculties, graduate schools, research centers, and a university hospital that serves both patients and medical training. Through these functions, Hokkaido University serves students, scholars, the local community, and broader society by advancing knowledge and contributing to regional development.

As one of Japan’s former Imperial Universities, Hokkaido University holds a distinguished position in the national higher education system and is recognized for its strong emphasis on research-intensive programs. The institution operates as a national university corporation under the oversight of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), which defines its governance and funding framework. This status gives it a degree of autonomy while aligning its mission with national policies on education, science, and technology. Notable competencies are frequently cited in fields such as cold‑region engineering, agricultural science, and materials research, reflecting the university’s historical roots in Hokkaido’s environment and industry. The university also maintains multiple campuses and affiliated facilities that extend its reach beyond the main Sapporo site.

In December 2015, the university reported an unauthorized access incident involving its career placement server, which potentially exposed personal data of approximately 112,600 students and graduates and job‑hunting information for about 1,600 companies. The breach was detected when the server began transmitting spam externally, leading to network isolation after unusual communications with unspecified domestic and foreign servers were observed. Although only a small number of authorized personnel should have accessed the system, investigators suspected that external parties had obtained credentials to infiltrate the server. University officials apologized for the incident, established an investigative panel to verify the extent of data exposure, and pledged to improve data management and preventive measures.
