Profile

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, also referred to as the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is a federally recognized tribal government whose headquarters are located in the United States. It delivers core governmental functions to its enrolled members, encompassing administrative offices, judicial systems, law enforcement, and public safety departments. The tribe maintains health care facilities that offer medical treatment, dental care, behavioral health counseling, and preventive health services to the community. Beyond governmental and health responsibilities, the tribe operates gaming establishments that include slot machines, table games, and associated entertainment venues commonly known as casinos. It also manages hospitality properties such as hotels that provide lodging, dining, and conference space for visitors and tribal members. Additionally, the tribe runs retail operations that consist of gasoline stations and convenience stores, which supply fuel and everyday goods to both residents and the traveling public in the region.

As a sovereign nation, the tribe exercises self‑governance and is not owned by, nor is it a subsidiary of, any external corporation or parent organization. Its distinguishing characteristics stem from the combination of governmental authority and commercial enterprises that are permitted under tribal sovereignty and federal statutes such as the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The tribe’s operational footprint is concentrated in the eastern portion of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with many of its facilities situated in and around the city of Sault Ste. Marie. The cyber incident that occurred on February 9, 2025, illustrated the extent of its interconnected services, as the attack prompted temporary closures of government offices, health clinics, casino floors, hotel properties, and gas station outlets. In response, the tribe engaged cybersecurity professionals and law enforcement partners, declined to meet ransom demands, and initiated a forensic audit to assess any data compromise while working to restore normal operations across all affected sectors.
