Profile

TenneT operates as a transmission system operator responsible for the high‑voltage electricity grid in the Netherlands and a significant part of Germany. Its core service is the transport of electricity from power producers—including conventional power plants, offshore wind farms and solar installations—to distribution networks and large industrial consumers, ensuring that supply meets demand at all times. The company manages a meshed network of alternating current lines operating at voltages of 110 kV, 220 kV and 380 kV, as well as several high‑voltage direct current links that connect the Dutch and German systems with neighbouring countries. By maintaining grid stability, providing balancing services and enabling the integration of renewable energy sources, TenneT supports the energy transition in Northwestern Europe.

As a regulated TSO, TenneT operates under the supervision of national energy authorities in the Netherlands and Germany and the European Union’s Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators. Its distinguishing attribute is the mandate to provide non‑discriminatory access to the grid while maintaining security of supply, system adequacy and efficient market functioning. The company invests heavily in grid modernization, including the deployment of new high‑voltage direct current corridors, advanced substation automation and dynamic line rating technologies to accommodate growing shares of wind and solar power. These competencies position TenneT as a key enabler of regional energy market coupling, cross‑border trade and decarbonisation efforts aimed at meeting climate targets.

TenneT Holding B.V. is wholly owned by the Dutch state, with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy exercising shareholder rights on behalf of the government. The group consists of the operating subsidiaries TenneT TSO B.V. for the Netherlands and TenneT GmbH for Germany, which together manage the combined transmission assets that span thousands of kilometres of lines and numerous interconnectors. In May 2023 the company experienced a data breach affecting its MOVEit Transfer file‑transfer service, a zero‑day vulnerability exploited by the Clop ransomware gang that led to the exfiltration of transferred files. Following the incident TenneT shut down the application, notified Dutch and German regulators, conducted a sensitivity analysis of the exposed data and contacted affected parties to mitigate potential harm.
