In March 2025, the municipality of Merlevenez, located within the Bretagne region, experienced a cyber intrusion that highlighted the cybersecurity challenges faced by local authorities. According to a report from France Bleu, attackers gained remote control of the municipality’s computers and monitored internal communications. Using stolen credentials, they attempted to order telephone services valued at about twenty‑five thousand euros from one provider and computer equipment exceeding one hundred twenty‑five thousand euros from another. The fraudulent orders were intercepted when the vendors contacted the legitimate director, preventing the purchases from being completed. The attackers also tried to alter the municipality’s bank details on genuine invoices in order to divert payments to accounts under their control. This attempt prompted the filing of complaints for hacking and identity theft with law‑enforcement agencies. The incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures for public entities, particularly those managing financial and operational data. Local officials have since reviewed their IT security protocols to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
