Profile
The Royal Malaysia Police, also known as the Malaysian Police, is the nation's primary law‑enforcement agency responsible for maintaining public order and safety across the country. Its core duties include preventing and investigating crimes, apprehending offenders, and ensuring the security of persons and property. The force also manages traffic regulation, issues summonses for violations, and works to reduce road accidents through enforcement and public education. In addition, it provides assistance during emergencies and natural disasters, coordinating rescue and relief efforts.
Operating under the authority of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Royal Malaysia Police has jurisdiction over all thirteen states and the three federal territories of Malaysia. As a federal agency, it maintains a uniform structure and standards of training throughout its nationwide network of police stations, district headquarters and specialized units. The organization is tasked with upholding the Federal Constitution and enforcing laws enacted by Parliament and state legislative assemblies. Its presence extends to urban centres, rural areas and coastal regions, allowing it to respond to incidents wherever they occur.
The force distinguishes itself through a range of specialist capabilities that address specific security challenges. These include counter‑terrorism units, narcotics investigation teams, cyber‑crime divisions and public order squadrons trained to manage large gatherings and protests. The 2015 compromise of its official social media accounts by the pro‑ISIS hacktivist group Anon Ghost highlighted the need for robust digital security measures within the organization. Following that incident, the police restored the compromised pages and have since increased efforts to protect their online communications and information assets.
Administratively, the Royal Malaysia Police is led by the Inspector‑General of Police, who reports directly to the Minister of Home Affairs and ultimately to the Yang di‑Pertuan Agong, the country's monarch. The organization's hierarchy includes deputy inspectors‑general, commissioners and various directors overseeing functional branches such as management, logistics and training. While it remains a government department, the force collaborates with other agencies, including the Malaysian Armed Forces and immigration authorities, on matters of national security.
Through its broad mandate and nationwide reach, the Royal Malaysia Police plays a central role in safeguarding Malaysia's social stability and supporting the rule of law. Its continuous adaptation to emerging threats, ranging from traditional crime to cyber‑enabled activities, reflects its commitment to protecting the public. The organization remains a key institution in Malaysia's efforts to ensure safety, justice and peace for all residents.
