The University System of Georgia (USG) is a public higher education organization that provides a broad array of academic programs, research opportunities, and public services across the state of Georgia. It offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees through its member institutions, supports workforce development initiatives, and engages in community outreach and economic development activities. USG’s mission centers on expanding access to quality education, advancing knowledge through research, and contributing to the cultural and social well-being of Georgians.

The system encompasses 26 colleges and universities, serving more than 300,000 students and employing tens of thousands of faculty and staff members, making it one of the largest public university networks in the United States. Several of its campuses hold the Carnegie Classification of R1 (Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity), reflecting a strong emphasis on research innovation and scholarly activity. USG’s distinguishing attributes include its role as a primary driver of Georgia’s economic growth, its extensive partnerships with industry and government, and its commitment to improving educational outcomes through initiatives such as the Complete College Georgia program. In May 2023, USG experienced a cybersecurity incident when threat actors exploited a zero‑day vulnerability in the MOVEit Transfer platform; the Clop ransomware gang claimed responsibility, prompting the system to apply security patches and launch an investigation into potential data exposure.

Structurally, the University System of Georgia operates as a state agency overseen by the Board of Regents, which is appointed by the Governor of Georgia and responsible for policy, budgetary oversight, and strategic direction. Funding derives from a combination of state appropriations, tuition and fees, federal grants, and private support. As a public entity, USG adheres to state governance requirements and accountability standards, and its institutions collectively contribute to the state’s higher education landscape and workforce readiness.
