In May 2023, a cyber attack on Bizland disrupted the Red Bus payment system, preventing users from adding credit to their transit cards. The municipality and Bizland responded by setting up a limited parallel manual system at only 31 locations across the city. This manual workaround caused long queues for residents seeking to top up their cards. Although administrative functions were eventually restored, the incident highlighted gaps in the operator's contingency planning. As a result, the municipal authorities imposed financial penalties on Bizland for failing to maintain an adequate backup plan. The episode underscores Red Bus's reliance on a single payment processor and the importance of resilient infrastructure for urban transit services.
