The transfers were drawn from the city’s municipal payroll accounts.
City officials stated that there is no evidence the city’s network or data systems were compromised.
They also confirmed that no resident data was affected by the incident.
The fraud was discovered the day after it occurred, on April 30, 2026.
Upon discovery, the city notified law enforcement agencies and the involved financial institution.
Additionally, the organisation engaged outside cybersecurity experts to assist with the response.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation acknowledged awareness of the incident but did not confirm whether it opened an investigation.
Some of the misappropriated funds have since been recovered through recovery efforts.
The city continues to work with its partners to recover the remaining amount.
While pursuing recovery, the municipality maintains its insurance coverage related to such events.
The City of Aurora is also reviewing its internal procedures, employee training programmes, and vendor contracts to strengthen defenses against similar fraud.
