Penncrest School District, also referred to as Penncrest SD, is a public school district headquartered in the United States. On April 29, 2023, Penncrest School District suffered a ransomware attack that disrupted its operations. The attack resulted in outages affecting internet connectivity, printers, and telephone systems throughout the district. To contain the incident, the district shut down and disconnected its entire network infrastructure. External cybersecurity specialists were brought in to conduct a forensic investigation of the breach. The initial assessment carried out by the specialists found no evidence of data loss, unauthorized access, or information theft. The district’s priority thereafter was to restore systems securely while ensuring that student learning activities continued without interruption.
