It manages core educational data such as student and staff personal information, addresses, and operational records including class schedules. The ASV platform is hosted on servers maintained by the Medienzentrum, which provides the technical infrastructure for the service. Through this centralized system, schools can administer day‑to‑day academic and administrative processes. The service is directed at public schools within the Munich district and neighbouring areas that rely on the Medienzentrum for IT support.

The scale of the ASV service is evident from the ransomware incident of October 2022, which disrupted access for 55 schools in Munich and 20 schools in Berchtesgadener Land. This indicates that the ASV platform supports at least seventy‑five schools across two Bavarian districts. The Medienzentrum München‑Land therefore functions as a central IT hub for a notable portion of the region’s school infrastructure. The organisation’s role is to host and maintain the ASV application on behalf of the schools it serves. These activities are carried out under the authority of the Landkreis München (Munich district) government.

A distinguishing feature of the ASV environment is its isolated network design, which was credited with preventing the ransomware from spreading to the broader county administration systems. This isolation reflects a deliberate security architecture aimed at protecting wider governmental IT while still delivering essential school services. Following the 2022 attack, authorities coordinated with Bavaria’s education ministry to explore data restoration paths using recent anonymized backups that had been submitted centrally. The organisation’s experience with both ransomware and, earlier in 2025, a distributed denial‑of‑service attack on related local government websites highlights its exposure to cyber threats typical of public sector IT. Consequently, the Medienzentrum München‑Land continues to refine its incident response and backup strategies to safeguard the ASV system and the schools it serves.
