In December 2023, Franziskus Hospital was hit by a Lockbit 3.0 ransomware attack that also affected two affiliated facilities within the Katholische Hospitalvereinigung Ostwestfalen group. The attackers gained unauthorized access, encrypted data, and caused a complete IT system outage across the hospital. In response, the hospital immediately shut down all systems, activated a crisis team, and notified the relevant authorities. Although patient treatment data remained accessible through backup systems, emergency services were suspended as a precautionary measure. Internal and external cybersecurity specialists were engaged to investigate the breach while hospital operations continued under technical limitations.
