RTÉ is Ireland's national public service broadcaster, providing television, radio and online content. It operates several television channels including RTÉ One, RTÉ Two and RTÉ News Now, as well as a suite of radio stations such as RTÉ Radio 1, 2fm, Lyric FM and Raidió na Gaeltachta. Through its digital platform RTÉ Player and its website, the organisation delivers live and on‑demand programming to audiences in Ireland and abroad. RTÉ’s mandate is to inform, educate and entertain, covering news, current affairs, drama, sport, music and cultural programming.

As a statutory corporation, RTÉ is funded primarily by the television licence fee supplemented by commercial advertising and sponsorship revenue. The broadcaster reaches a substantial portion of the Irish population each week, with its services accessible via terrestrial, satellite, cable and internet distribution. Its international outreach includes RTÉ International, which provides Irish‑language and general interest content to overseas audiences and the Irish diaspora.

RTÉ functions under the regulatory oversight of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and operates under a public service remit defined by the Broadcasting Act. The organisation is owned by the Irish state and comes under the auspices of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. RTÉ maintains a number of subsidiaries, notably RTÉ Commercial Enterprises which handles commercial activities, RTÉ Publishing for print and digital publications, and the RTÉ Orchestras that manage the national symphony and concert ensembles. In July 2025 RTÉ experienced a cyber security incident that was reported in its own news outlets, highlighting the organisation’s ongoing focus on information security. These attributes position RTÉ as a central cultural institution in Ireland, balancing public service obligations with modern multimedia delivery.
