Profile
The National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) is Poland’s principal institution for basic and applied nuclear science and technology. It conducts research in fields such as reactor physics, neutron scattering, radiation protection, nuclear safety and radiological emergency preparedness. The centre operates the Maria research reactor, which provides neutron beams for scientific experiments and produces radioisotopes used in medical diagnostics, therapy and industrial applications. In addition to reactor‑based work, NCBJ offers analytical services, material testing and calibration laboratories that support both domestic users and international partners. Its activities are directed toward advancing knowledge, training specialists and supplying the nuclear sector with reliable technical solutions.
Located in Świerk, a short distance from Warsaw, the centre serves as the national hub for nuclear research and development in Poland. It employs a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers and technicians who collaborate on projects funded by the state, the European Union and various international organisations. NCBJ participates in national programmes related to energy policy, environmental monitoring and the preparation for potential nuclear power deployment. Through its outreach and training initiatives, the institute contributes to the education of university students and professionals working in radiation‑related industries. The facility’s infrastructure includes laboratories, irradiation facilities and specialised equipment that enable a broad spectrum of experiments and services.
A distinguishing feature of NCBJ is its stewardship of Poland’s only operational research reactor, the Maria, which underpins much of its experimental capability and isotope production capacity. The centre holds recognised expertise in neutron‑based techniques, making it a valuable partner for materials science, biology and archaeology studies. It also fulfils a regulatory support role by providing technical advice to governmental bodies on nuclear safety, radiation protection and emergency response. Structurally, NCBJ is a state‑owned research institute operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, ensuring alignment with national scientific priorities and public accountability. Its combination of unique reactor facilities, specialised competencies and institutional mandate positions it as a cornerstone of Poland’s nuclear research landscape.
