Goldcorp, also known as Bcgoldcorp, is a Canadian-based gold-mining firm engaged in the exploration, extraction, and production of precious metals. The organization’s headquarters are located in Canada. On 26 April 2016, the firm experienced a cyberattack that resulted in unauthorized access to its internal network. The breach led to the public release of sensitive data, including employee personal information, financial records, proprietary documents, and internal IT procedures. After detecting the intrusion, Goldcorp confirmed the network compromise and promptly launched an investigation with external security experts. The company notified the relevant regulatory authorities and began coordinating a response to mitigate further exposure. In the aftermath, Goldcorp implemented enhanced security measures, such as updated monitoring tools and revised access controls, to address the vulnerabilities exposed by the incident.

On 27 March 2016, the mining company’s website was defaced by the hacktivist collective Anonymous. The attackers replaced the homepage with a Rick Astley video as part of their #OpCanary campaign. Anonymous stated that the action was a symbolic “hit and run” intended to protest Canada’s alleged protection of corporations involved in human rights abuses and environmental destruction. The group aimed to draw attention to their claim that Canadian institutions shield resource extraction firms from accountability. As part of their protest, Anonymous criticized the country’s stock exchange for financing the majority of global mining operations. They also accused the government of opposing United Nations measures designed to protect indigenous populations while favoring corporate interests. The defacement was characterized by the hackers as a brief, attention‑grabbing stunt rather than a comprehensive data breach. Together, these episodes illustrate how the mining sector’s operations can intersect with both cybersecurity threats and hacktivist activism.
