Wormhole is a cross‑chain bridge protocol that enables the transfer of tokens, non‑fungible tokens and arbitrary data between different blockchain networks. It provides developers with a generic messaging layer that can be used to build decentralized applications requiring interoperability, such as cross‑chain decentralized exchanges, lending platforms and NFT marketplaces. The protocol is open‑source and operates as a decentralized network of validators known as guardians who observe and attest to messages on source chains. By locking assets on one chain and minting representative tokens on another, Wormhole maintains a 1:1 backing for wrapped assets like wETH.
