National Informatics Centre

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) is the premier informatics and information technology arm of the Government of India, tasked with delivering a broad spectrum of ICT services to central and state government departments. It designs, develops, and maintains software applications that support e‑governance initiatives, ranging from citizen‑facing portals to internal administrative systems. NIC operates the National Informatics Network, a secure backbone that connects government offices across the country and facilitates data exchange and collaboration. In addition to application development, the agency provides cybersecurity services, including threat monitoring, incident response, and the issuance of SSL certificates as a recognised certifying authority under India’s Controller of Certifying Authorities. Its work underpins critical national infrastructure, ensuring the reliability and security of digital services used by millions of citizens and government officials. NIC’s role extends to capacity building, offering training and consultancy to enhance the IT capabilities of various government entities.

The organisation functions as an attached office of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, receiving direct funding and policy guidance from the Government of India. Its nationwide reach is reflected in the presence of NIC units in state capitals and district headquarters, enabling localized support while maintaining centralised standards. NIC’s dual mandate as both a service provider and a regulatory‑adjacent entity distinguishes it from typical IT vendors, granting it authority to issue trusted digital certificates and to advise on national cyber‑policy.
