Nepali Army

The Nepali Army is the land warfare branch of the Nepalese Armed Forces and operates under the authority of the Ministry of Defence of the Government of Nepal. Its primary mandate is to defend the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty against external threats. The force also supports internal security operations, including border security and assistance to civil authorities during emergencies. In peacetime, units are engaged in disaster relief efforts, such as responding to floods, landslides, and earthquakes that frequently affect the nation. Additionally, the army contributes to national development by undertaking engineering projects like road construction and bridge building in remote and underserved areas.

Given Nepal's predominantly mountainous geography, the Nepali Army has cultivated specialized expertise in high‑altitude and mountain warfare, including training for glacier travel, avalanche rescue, and cold‑weather endurance. It functions as the state institution responsible for implementing national defence policy and operates under the constitutional framework that designates the President of Nepal as the Supreme Commander of the armed forces. The force has a longstanding record of participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions, deploying battalions to various conflict zones to help maintain international peace and security. Structurally, the Nepali Army is a wholly state‑owned entity, with no private shareholders or parent company, and its senior leadership is appointed by the government in accordance with defence legislation. The organization also runs training establishments that prepare officers for combat, staff, and specialist roles.
