Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is a public state university that delivers higher education and facilitates research across a wide range of disciplines. It provides undergraduate programmes in faculties such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Education and Engineering, allowing students to pursue bachelor’s degrees in both traditional and professional fields. At the postgraduate level, HPU offers master’s programmes and postgraduate diplomas that cater to specialised academic and vocational interests. The university also administers doctoral programmes, enabling scholars to conduct original research under the guidance of faculty supervisors. In addition to regular classroom instruction, HPU runs a Directorate of Distance Education that offers flexible learning options for learners who cannot attend on‑campus courses. HPU was established under the Himachal Pradesh University Act, 1970 and functions as the principal state‑funded university of Himachal Pradesh. Its administrative headquarters and main academic campus are situated in Shimla, the summer capital of the state, from where it oversees a network of affiliated and constituent colleges distributed across various districts. The university has earned accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, indicating that its academic processes and infrastructure meet recognised quality benchmarks. As the sole state university in the region, HPU offers a distinctive blend of conventional arts and science courses alongside professional programmes such as engineering, law and management. It operates under a bicameral governance structure comprising an Executive Council and an Academic Council, both constituted in accordance with the state government’s directives. HPU does not have a parent organisation or subsidiaries; it is a standalone public entity funded and regulated by the Government of Himachal Pradesh. The university’s digital presence, including its official website, was compromised on 7 July 2025 when hackers posted anti‑India remarks and images, prompting the institution to take the site offline for maintenance and leading to a police investigation. This incident underscored the importance of robust cyber‑security safeguards for the university’s online services and infrastructure.
