Profile
Hawaiʻi Community College, also known as Hawaiʻi CC, is an educational institution forming part of the broader University of Hawaiʻi system. Its primary function involves providing higher education services within the United States, specifically operating from its headquarters location. As a community college, it serves local student populations seeking associate degrees, vocational training, and foundational coursework. The institution relies heavily on networked information technology systems to support its administrative functions, academic programs, and campus operations, including wired and wireless internet access essential for students and staff.
This college experienced a significant cybersecurity incident on June 13, 2023, when it suffered a ransomware attack that compromised its internal network. The attack, claimed by the NoEscape ransomware group, forced the college to take its entire network offline to contain the breach. Federal authorities and cybersecurity experts were engaged to manage the incident. The attackers successfully exfiltrated approximately 65 gigabytes of data containing the personal information of around 28,000 individuals associated with the college. To prevent public release of the stolen data, Hawaiʻi Community College negotiated with the threat actors, resulting in the claimed destruction of the information. Restoration efforts for the college's IT infrastructure commenced afterward. Notification letters detailing the breach and offering credit monitoring services were subsequently sent to all potentially affected individuals. The incident was isolated to Hawaiʻi Community College, with no other campuses within the University of Hawaiʻi system believed to have been impacted.
