Profile

Mixin, also known as Mixin Network, is a Hong Kong‑based cryptocurrency firm that operates a decentralized network designed for instant and feeless transfers of digital assets. The network uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) ledger to achieve high throughput and low latency, allowing users to move funds across multiple blockchains without relying on traditional intermediaries. In addition to the core transfer layer, Mixin provides a combined wallet and messaging application called Mixin Messenger, which lets users deposit, withdraw, and exchange a variety of cryptocurrencies while chatting with contacts. The platform is accessible to users who wish to settle transactions quickly and with enhanced privacy. By integrating payment functionality directly into a social communication platform, Mixin positions itself at the intersection of messaging and decentralized finance.

On September 23, 2023, Mixin disclosed that attackers had compromised the database of its cloud service provider, resulting in the theft of approximately $200 million worth of cryptocurrency. The breach forced the company to suspend deposit and withdrawal services while it investigated the incident with the assistance of Google’s Mandiant team and the cybersecurity firm SlowMist. Mixin pledged to restore normal operations once the identified vulnerabilities were addressed and later announced a plan to compensate users for the stolen assets. The incident was described as the largest cryptocurrency theft of the year, surpassing a earlier $197 million exploit against a lending platform. This event highlighted the risks associated with reliance on third‑party cloud infrastructure for custodial crypto services.
