Greek National Police

The Hellenic Police, known in Greek as Ελληνική Αστυνομία, is the national law‑enforcement agency of Greece tasked with maintaining public order, preventing and detecting crime, protecting persons and property, and ensuring road safety across the country. Its responsibilities include routine patrols, criminal investigations, traffic control, border and customs enforcement, crowd management during public events, and coordination with other emergency services in natural disasters or terrorist incidents. As the sole police force with jurisdiction over the entire Greek territory, it serves all citizens, residents, and visitors, operating from a central headquarters in Athens and through a network of regional directorates and local stations that cover mainland Greece, the islands, and maritime zones.

The Hellenic Police holds a distinct regulatory role as the state’s primary authority for internal security, exercising powers granted by the Greek Constitution and specific legislation such as the Police Code and the Law on Public Order. It maintains several specialized directorates, including the Directorate for Counter‑Terrorism, the Directorate for Cyber Crime, the Directorate for Traffic Safety, and the Special Forces Unit (EKAM), which enable it to address complex threats ranging from organized crime to cyber‑attacks. The agency also runs the Hellenic Police Academy, where officers receive initial training and continuous professional development in areas such as forensic science, human rights policing, and crisis management. Its nationwide reach and integrated command structure allow rapid deployment of resources to any location, a capability demonstrated during large‑scale operations and during the 2020 DDoS disruption of government websites when the police worked alongside other state entities to restore services.

The Hellenic Police is a public sector organization that forms part of the Greek State’s executive branch, reporting directly to the Ministry of Citizen Protection (formerly the Ministry of Public Order and Citizen Protection). It has no private owners or parent company; its funding, personnel, and equipment are allocated through the national budget, and its operational directives are issued by the government. While it collaborates with international police bodies such as Europol and INTERPOL, it remains a sovereign national agency without subsidiaries or corporate affiliates, and its organizational hierarchy is defined by the Chief of Police who oversees all regional and functional units.
