Profile
Casino Rama Resort operates as a full‑service casino and hotel destination in central Ontario. The property offers a casino floor with slot machines and table games, a hotel with guest rooms, multiple dining venues, and an entertainment theatre that hosts concerts, comedy shows and other live performances. In addition to gaming and lodging, the resort provides conference and meeting facilities for corporate and social events. Its primary market includes visitors from the surrounding region, across Ontario and from other parts of Canada.
The resort is situated in the town of Orillia, Ontario, on land belonging to the Chippewas of Rama First Nation. It is a notable casino resort in the province, employing a substantial workforce to support its various amenities. The hotel component offers accommodation for overnight guests, while the entertainment theatre attracts regional and national acts throughout the year. These features position Casino Rama as a notable leisure and hospitality venue in central Ontario.
Ownership of the resort rests with the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, which holds the provincial gaming licence for the property. Day‑to‑day operations are managed by Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited under a contractual arrangement. This structure combines Indigenous ownership with professional casino management, a model that is distinctive within Ontario’s gaming sector. The resort is regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, ensuring compliance with provincial gaming and hospitality standards.
The Chippewas of Rama First Nation uses the resort as a key element of its economic development strategy, generating revenue and employment for the community. Gateway Casinos & Entertainment brings operational expertise in casino management, food and beverage services, and event coordination. Together, the partnership aims to deliver a sustainable and competitive entertainment destination.
In November 2016, Casino Rama Resort experienced a cyberattack in which an intruder accessed and exfiltrated over a decade of sensitive data, including employee payroll records, social insurance numbers, financial reports, security documents, emails and vendor information. The breach prompted notifications to current and former employees, customers and vendors advising them to monitor their financial accounts for suspicious activity. Law enforcement and cybersecurity experts were engaged to investigate the incident, and while there was no evidence of continued network access by the attacker, the stolen data remained a concern for potential public release. Casino operations were not disrupted because the gaming systems operate on a network separate from the compromised corporate environment.
