Profile

SATT Sud-Est, also known as SATT Southeast, is a French Société d'Accélération du Transfert de Technologie dedicated to moving innovations from public research laboratories to the market. It operates as a technology transfer office that provides funding, expertise, and support for the maturation of early-stage inventions. The organisation assists with intellectual property protection, licensing negotiations, and the creation of spin‑off companies. Its activities are aimed at increasing the economic impact of publicly funded research in the southeast of France.

SATT Sud-Est serves the academic and research institutions located in the southeastern part of France. It collaborates with universities, CNRS laboratories, Inserm institutes and other public research organisations based in that territory. By working with these partners, the SATT can identify and support projects arising from a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines. Its geographic focus enables it to act as a regional conduit for technology transfer activities.

In June 2022, SATT Sud-Est experienced a cybersecurity breach when the Industrial Spy ransomware gang infiltrated its systems, exfiltrating approximately 200 GB of data and deploying ransomware. The attackers defaced the organisation’s public website to display a ransom note demanding five hundred thousand US dollars, threatening to sell the stolen information on a Tor‑based marketplace if the demand was not met. This incident represented a deviation from typical ransomware extortion, as the gang chose to apply public pressure by compromising the corporate site directly. The event highlighted the growing trend of ransomware operators using website defacement as part of their pressure tactics.

SATT Sud-Est is structured as a public‑private partnership, receiving financial backing from the French state through the Investissements d’Avenir programme and contributions from regional authorities and participating research institutions. Its governance includes representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, regional councils, and the member universities and research organisations. This ownership model enables the SATT to align public policy objectives with the practical needs of innovators and industry partners. As part of the national network of SATTs, it contributes to France’s broader strategy of enhancing technology transfer and fostering innovation‑driven economic growth.
