Profile
The New Hampshire Retirement System (NHRS) is a public-sector pension fund established to administer retirement benefits for eligible public employees in the state of New Hampshire and its political subdivisions. It manages defined benefit pension plans, processes member contributions, and disburses monthly annuity payments to retirees and their beneficiaries. The system operates under state statutory authority to provide lifetime retirement income, disability benefits, and survivor options for individuals who have served in public roles, including state government, education, and municipal positions. NHRS is responsible for maintaining the financial integrity of the retirement trust funds, investing assets to ensure long-term solvency, and delivering customer service to its active and retired members. Its core function is to act as a fiduciary for the retirement security of New Hampshire's public workforce, handling enrollment, service credit calculations, and compliance with pension regulations.
In August 2023, NHRS experienced a data security incident involving a third-party vendor, PBI Research Services, which was compromised through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer application. This breach exposed the personal data of NHRS retirees and beneficiaries, specifically names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers. No internal NHRS systems were directly compromised, as the vulnerability was confined to the vendor's environment. Following the discovery of the breach, PBI Research Services initiated notification to affected individuals and is providing complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services. The incident highlights NHRS's reliance on external partners for data management functions and the associated risks in vendor relationships. Despite this event, NHRS continues its primary mission of administering retirement benefits while cooperating with the vendor to address potential impacts on its members.
