Profile

The New Hampshire Retirement System (NHRS) is the public pension plan responsible for administering retirement benefits to eligible state and municipal employees in New Hampshire. It provides service retirement, disability retirement, and survivor benefits to members who include teachers, state workers, police officers, firefighters, and other public sector personnel. The system manages the collection of employee and employer contributions, invests those assets to fund future benefit payments, and processes monthly benefit disbursements to retirees and beneficiaries. NHRS also offers counseling, educational resources, and online tools to help members understand their retirement options and plan for post‑employment life. Its core mission is to ensure the long‑term financial security of those who have served the state and its communities.

The organization operates under the authority of New Hampshire state law and is overseen by a Board of Trustees that includes state officials, employee representatives, and investment experts. As a governmental entity, NHRS is subject to fiduciary standards that require it to act solely in the interest of its members and beneficiaries. It does not have a private parent company or subsidiaries; its assets are held in a trust fund dedicated exclusively to the payment of promised benefits. The system’s investment function is carried out by internal staff and external managers who follow a diversified strategy aimed at balancing risk and return over the long term.

In August 2023, NHRS disclosed that a third‑party vendor, PBI Research Services, suffered a breach of the MOVEit file transfer application, which exposed personal data such as names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers of some retirees and beneficiaries. NHRS emphasized that its own internal systems were not compromised in the incident. The vendor has undertaken notification efforts and is providing affected individuals with free credit monitoring and identity protection services.
