In August 2023, NHRS disclosed that a third‑party vendor, PBI Research Services, suffered a breach of the MOVEit file transfer application, which exposed personal data such as names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers of some retirees and beneficiaries. NHRS emphasized that its own internal systems were not compromised in the incident. The vendor has undertaken notification efforts and is providing affected individuals with free credit monitoring and identity protection services.
