New Hampshire Retirement System

In August 2023, NHRS experienced a data security incident involving a third-party vendor, PBI Research Services, which was compromised through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer application. This breach exposed the personal data of NHRS retirees and beneficiaries, specifically names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers. No internal NHRS systems were directly compromised, as the vulnerability was confined to the vendor's environment. Following the discovery of the breach, PBI Research Services initiated notification to affected individuals and is providing complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services. The incident highlights NHRS's reliance on external partners for data management functions and the associated risks in vendor relationships. Despite this event, NHRS continues its primary mission of administering retirement benefits while cooperating with the vendor to address potential impacts on its members.
