Profile narrative
KEPCO is South Korea's primary electricity utility, responsible for the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electric power across the peninsula. It operates a diverse portfolio of power plants that includes nuclear, coal, liquefied natural gas, hydroelectric and renewable facilities, supplying electricity to residential, commercial and industrial customers nationwide. In addition to domestic operations, KEPCO engages in overseas engineering, procurement and construction projects, offering turnkey solutions for power plants and grid infrastructure in various countries. The company also invests in research and development related to smart grid technologies, energy storage and carbon‑free generation methods. Its service area covers essentially the entire South Korean market, making it the sole provider of bulk electricity to the national grid. KEPCO’s business model integrates wholesale power generation with retail sales through its subsidiaries, enabling it to manage both supply‑side and demand‑side aspects of the power sector.
KEPCO is a state‑owned enterprise, wholly owned by the Government of South Korea and overseen by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. This ownership structure gives it a strategic role in implementing national energy policy, including the country’s nuclear power programme and its transition toward renewable energy sources. The utility is recognized for operating one of the world’s largest nuclear fleets, contributing a significant share of South Korea’s baseload electricity. It also distinguishes itself through extensive overseas EPC experience, having built power plants and transmission networks in regions such as the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Africa. Furthermore, KEPCO has been active in developing smart grid pilots, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and hydrogen‑related projects, reflecting its focus on modernising the power system. These attributes position KEPCO as a central player in both domestic energy security and the global power‑engineering market.
