Profile

PolitiFact is a fact‑checking organization that evaluates the accuracy of statements made by politicians, public officials, advocacy groups and other figures in the public sphere. Its primary product is the Truth‑O‑Meter, a rating system that assigns each claim a level of truthfulness ranging from “True” to “Pants on Fire,” accompanied by a detailed explanation of the evidence and reasoning behind the assessment. The site publishes its analyses online, making them freely accessible to journalists, educators, policymakers and the general public who seek reliable information to inform civic discourse. PolitiFact’s work is rooted in journalism, and it has been recognized with a Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2009 for its fact‑checking coverage of the 2008 presidential campaign.

The organization distinguishes itself through a specialized focus on nonpartisan verification, employing a team of reporters and editors who follow a standardized methodology that emphasizes transparency, source documentation and clear communication of uncertainty. PolitiFact operates within the broader media literacy and accountability sector, positioning itself as a trusted resource that complements traditional news outlets by isolating factual claims from rhetorical spin. Its affiliation with the Poynter Institute, a nonprofit journalism school based in the United States, provides institutional support and underscores its commitment to ethical journalism standards. Ownership remains with the Poynter Institute, which oversees PolitiFact’s editorial direction while allowing it to maintain operational independence.

In October 2017, PolitiFact experienced a security breach in which attackers injected CoinHive‑based cryptocurrency mining scripts into the site’s navigation code, causing visitors’ browsers to covertly mine Monero without consent. The malicious code ran eight simultaneous instances, driving high CPU usage and degrading performance for users before being detected by security researchers and reported publicly. PolitiFact acknowledged the compromise, stated that it had been unaware of the intrusion, launched an investigation and worked to remove the offending script while the incident remained active. This event highlighted the vulnerability of even well‑known media platforms to illicit monetization schemes and prompted the organization to reinforce its web‑security measures.
