National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), also known by its alias NAL, functions as India's premier aerospace research institution under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It engages in research, design, development, testing and evaluation of a wide variety of aerospace systems, ranging from fixed‑wing aircraft and rotary‑wing platforms to unmanned aerial vehicles and aerospace structures. The laboratory’s activities cover propulsion technology, advanced composite materials, flight mechanics, avionics and aircraft systems integration, thereby supporting both defence and civilian aviation sectors. NAL provides wind‑tunnel testing, computational fluid dynamics simulations and structural analysis services that are used by Indian aerospace manufacturers for design validation and performance optimisation. It also conducts flight‑test campaigns using its own aircraft and airborne laboratories to gather data for performance certification and safety assessment. NAL’s distinguishing attributes stem from its deep specialisation in aerospace science and engineering, which positions it as a key technical advisor to the Government of India on aerospace policy and programme execution. The laboratory maintains recognised expertise in areas such as aerodynamic testing, aero‑elasticity, fatigue and fracture analysis, non‑destructive evaluation and advanced materials characterisation, capabilities that are utilised across multiple national projects. Structurally, NAL is a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, receiving full funding from the Government of India and reporting to the Ministry of Science and Technology, which ensures its alignment with national strategic priorities. This governmental ownership also entails adherence to strict security protocols, especially for projects involving classified defence data, a fact highlighted by the ransomware incident of November 2023. In that event, attackers associated with the LockBit ransomware‑as‑a‑service group infiltrated NAL’s networks, exfiltrating sensitive documents and threatening to release them unless a ransom was paid. The National Investigation Agency took over the investigation, treating the breach as a potential cyberterrorist act, while international law‑enforcement actions later disrupted LockBit’s infrastructure and recovered decryption keys. The episode underscored the critical nature of the information held by NAL and the importance of robust cyber‑defence measures for India’s aerospace research establishment.
