Profile
Boryspil International Airport is also known as Kyiv International Airport. Its headquarters is located in Ukraine.
On 27 June 2017, a cyber attack targeted Ukrainian infrastructure, affecting multiple sectors across the country. The attack disrupted operations at Boryspil International Airport, rendering key systems unavailable. In addition to the airport, the national bank, the state power provider, and various government agencies experienced significant interference. Analysis identified the malicious software as the ransomware variant known as Petrwrap or Petya. This ransomware encrypted files on infected machines and demanded payment in Bitcoin to restore access. The code exhibited similarities to the earlier WannaCry ransomware that had spread globally months before. Critical airport functions, including internal computers and the electronic departure boards, were rendered inoperable. Financial institutions reported ATM outages and disruptions to online services as a direct consequence of the infection. The Ukrainian incident unfolded alongside a broader wave of cyber activity that impacted international firms such as Maersk and Rosneft. Investigators noted that no definitive link had been established between the Ukrainian event and those overseas incidents.
Ukrainian officials have historically attributed infrastructure‑targeting cyber operations to Russian actors. Russia has consistently denied any involvement in such attacks. The June 2017 assault took place amid heightened tensions following the assassination of an intelligence officer in Kyiv.
