Kauno technologijos universitetas, also known as KTU, is a higher education institution located in Kaunas, Lithuania. It provides undergraduate, graduate and doctoral study programmes focused on engineering, technology, natural sciences and related fields. The university carries out research activities that support innovation in areas such as mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science and materials technology. Through its study and research units, KTU offers services to students, academic staff and external partners, including consultancy and technology transfer. Its mission emphasizes the development of skilled professionals who can contribute to Lithuania’s industrial and technological advancement.

The university operates several faculties and institutes that together cover a broad spectrum of technical disciplines. It maintains a presence in Kaunas with multiple campus buildings and also collaborates with regional partners across the Baltic Sea region. KTU attracts a student body numbering in the thousands each year, reflecting its role as one of the larger technical universities in the country. International cooperation is facilitated through exchange programmes and joint research projects with universities abroad.

Distinguishing attributes of KTU include its strong orientation toward applied research and close links with industry partners. The institution frequently participates in European Union funded projects that aim to advance innovation and competitiveness. Its academic staff are engaged in both theoretical investigations and practical development work, often resulting in patents and prototypes. These characteristics position KTU as a key player in Lithuania’s technology and innovation ecosystem.

As a public higher education establishment, KTU is funded primarily by the Lithuanian state and overseen by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. The university’s governance structure includes a senate, a council and a rector who are responsible for academic and administrative affairs. In December 2023 KTU experienced a cyberattack that disrupted access to several information systems and led to the unauthorized retrieval of personal data belonging to employees and students. The incident prompted the university to launch recovery efforts, notify authorities and implement additional security measures.
