The Rio 2016 Olympics, also referred to as the 2016 Summer Olympics, was the international multi‑sport event hosted by Brazil that organized and delivered the Olympic Games for athletes, officials, spectators, and media worldwide. Its core function was to plan and stage competitions across the Olympic sports programme, provide venues and infrastructure, manage ticketing and accreditation, coordinate broadcasting rights, and deliver services such as transportation, security, and medical support. The event was overseen by the Rio de Janeiro Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (CORio), which operated under the authority of the International Olympic Committee and worked with national sports federations, local government agencies, and private contractors to fulfill its responsibilities.

The Games took place in Rio de Janeiro from August 5 to August 21, 2016, featuring more than 11,000 athletes representing 207 National Olympic Committees. Competitions were conducted in 33 venues spread throughout the city, including newly built facilities such as the Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca and existing landmarks like Maracanã Stadium and the Sambadrome. The event attracted a substantial live audience and reached a global television viewership estimated in the billions, making it one of the most widely watched sporting occasions in history.

As the first Olympic Games held in South America, the Rio 2016 Olympics underscored the continent’s capacity to host a large‑scale, multi‑disciplinary sports festival. It aimed to create a lasting legacy through urban renewal projects, upgrades to public transportation, and the development of sports facilities that would continue to serve local communities after the closing ceremony. The organizing committee also emphasized the importance of integrating cultural programming that showcased Brazilian arts and traditions alongside the athletic competitions.

The organizational structure for the event was temporary; the Rio de Janeiro Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games was established specifically to plan and execute the Games and was dissolved once the event concluded. While the committee handled day‑to‑day operations and liaised with Brazilian governmental bodies, the International Olympic Committee retained ultimate authority over the Olympic brand, the use of its symbols, and the overall governance of the Games. No permanent parent or subsidiary relationship existed beyond the ad hoc nature of the organizing committee for this edition of the Olympics.
